Island Jewels

We've known about Barbara Fernald forever. She's a longtime Islesford resident and fellow writer. We have mutual friends. The Maven is pretty sure she interviewed her once for a story.

But a few months back, we discovered Barb was living a secret life. Well, it was a secret to us, anyway.

As it turns out, Fernald makes this amazing jewelry. Of course, her work — handmade beads made of glass, fine metals, beach stones and precious metal clays — draws some inspiration from the landscape around her. There are nods to the ocean, rocky beaches, and tangles of seaweed and seaglass that litter the shore. But there's an elegance, a subtlety to her designs that transcends the seaside jewelry we're accustomed to seeing.

It's completely contemporary. And we're thrilled that the secret is out.

Barbara S. Fernald Jewelry designs are available at Archipelago in Rockland, Winters Work and Whale's Rib on Islesford, Alone Moose Gallery in Bar Harbor and at the Center for Maine Craft in Gardiner. For more information, visit Barbara's blog here.
