Shell Game

She wears seashells by the seashore. Or by the lake. Or to the club. And you can, too, in this sweet-yet-sexy frock from Orono-based fashion designer Caitlin Cogan.

Last time we checked in with Caitlin, she was making adorable hand-knit cowls and headbands — perfect for winter. Now that the weather has turned, we're pining for one of her body-skimming knit dresses, adorned with seashells in a way that is entirely (and, having grown up near Old Orchard beach, The Maven must say, surprisingly) un-tacky.

However, knowing Caitlin's work, this is no surprise. The California native and 2007 Fashion Careers College graduate has an eye for great lines. While her recent fashion shows have included Rockabilly-inspired dresses and pinup-style lingerie, Caitlin's spring 2009 looks are more streamlined, less frilly and incredibly wearable.

We're crushing on the pictured bamboo dress with delicate shell detailing — for $60, Caitlin will make one in your size. Her Etsy shop features a casual pink dress for $30, which is also adorable. But just knowing Caitlin will hand-sew a gown for under $100 makes us want to contact her to find out what kind of custom confection she'll dream up.

We're sure it will be shell. Ooops. We mean swell.

Both dresses will be available at Bella Luna (48 Main St., Bangor) starting May 4. For more information, contact Caitlin at catiecogan@yahoo.com.
