Hey, Sweet Thing

Let's just get this out of the way early: It may sound sacrilegious, but The Maven isn't a huge fan of maple anything. As a girl, she did overindulge in those maple sugar candies on a trip to the White Mountains, so perhaps she'll blame it on that.

Yes, syrup has its place. On pancakes and waffles. But when people talk about Maine Maple Sunday, The Maven doesn't think "sugar shack." She thinks "sugar shock."

This Sunday at Hartstone Inn in Camden, chef-owner Michael Salmon will present a five-course prix fixe menu that could change all that. And at $45 per person, it's truly a sweet deal.

Highlights include Maple-Seared Duck Breast with Peppered Tropical Fruits and Walnut Oil, Maple-Glazed Salmon with Wilted Spinach and Jasmine Fried Rice, a Maple-Walnut Souffle with Maple Creme Anglaise, and — of course — Homemade Maple Candies.

It's enough to make even a hater like The Maven turn over a new (maple) leaf.
