When You Are The Anvil, Bear

Six words you never thought you'd see in the same sentence: Biddeford's looking pretty cool these days.

And yet, there it is. In the interest of full disclosure, The Maven is a Saco girl, which comes with its own set of biases. We remember the days when the most exciting thing in downtown Biddeford was Pizza by Alex — actually, Pizza by Alex still might be the most exciting thing in downtown Biddeford. But now, it has company.

Take, for instance, Loving Anvil, a hip little shop that feels like it was plucked out of the Pacific Northwest (or Austin) and dropped next to the Wonder Bar. We popped in there the other day and were transported by owner Coco Corral's jewelry designs — still dreaming of the tiny stackable rings and the woodsy pendants (pictured) — and the custom-painted longboards by her husband, Gil.

What we love about this shop is simple: it's full of artsy, eclectic, handmade stuff that you can't find anywhere else, and it feels like no other boutique we've visited in Maine. So visit. And if you time it just right, you can grab a Pizza by Alex (or a bowl of pho, some pad Thai or a burrito) and make a day out of it.

Loving Anvil is located at the corner of Washington and Main Streets in Biddeford and is open from noon to 6 Thursday through Saturday. To shop Coco's designs online, visit the Loving Anvil Web site or Etsy shop.

Loving Anvil is a great shop. My wife, Heather, and sons Trenton and Cooper stop there often. The owners are the most enjoyable folks to be around.

Yes, Loving Anvil is great, and so is their new venue, HFS Annex. (Hog Farm Studios), located on the other side of the street, in the rear next to Bebe's Buritos, is another cool place in Biddeford!
