To-Do List: Long Weekend Edition

OK, so we're a day early. But The Maven worked so many years without holidays that the very idea of a three-day weekend has the whole Lainsbury household in a tizzy. Besides, we hope you, too, start your Independence Day celebration early. Go Fourth in style.

Eat ME
Love eating locally grown, raised and harvested food? So do we. So why not get in on Food Independence Day? The brainchild of Roger Doiron of Scarborough, who heads up Kitchen Gardeners International and was largely responsible for Michelle Obama planting an organic garden at the White House, the project intends to urge each state's First Family to do the same. The Baldaccis are on board. But it also urges everyone to eat a locally sourced meal on the Fourth. Lobsters? Strawberry shortcake? Amazing cheeses? Count us in.
Where: Your kitchen.
When: July 4.

Drink ME
We love fireworks, but we prefer sparklers. Fancy That! an effervescent apricot wine from Winterport Winery, is perfectly festive for the Fourth. Plus, it counts as local if you're planning to observe Food Independence Day.

When: All weekend long

Celebrate with ME
A nest of baby eagles in the bay put Camden's Fourth of July festivities on hold for a few years. But the eagles have moved on and the fireworks and festivities are back on in full force this year. Camden Premier Inns has organized the First Festival of Independence, a weekendlong celebration throughout the midcoast, with fireworks (weather permitting), parades, concerts, picnics and other small-town fun.
Where: Thomaston, Camden, Rockport, Owl's Head.
When: July 3-5.

Abide with ME
The weather is going to be crappy anyway, so why not bowl, drink White Russians and listen to cheesy lounge music? You can do all of this and more at Bangor's Lebowski Bowl-A-Rama. Read more about it here.
Where: Bangor Opera House, Sports Arena in Hermon.
When: Saturday, July 4 (movie screening, live music by Richard Cheese); July 5 (all-you-can-abide bowling party).
Web: Lebowski Bowl-A-Rama.

Shop with ME
Celebrate your retail independence by buying local handmade items from one of the Etsy Maine Team members. The pictured magnets are made by Kristina Myers, but there are hundreds of amazing, unique, very cool things to choose from. Just watch out, because Etsy is super-addicting.
Where: Wherever you have Web access.
When: 24/7
Web: visit the Etsy Maine Team blog here.
