So Much To Do

The weekend is FINALLY here (although, if you're The Maven, it started yesterday). Here's our roundup of the best things to do in Maine today and tomorrow.

Dance with ME: Elle Paye is a young girl from Saco who is bravely — and, as you may notice from the picture at right, defiantly — battling cancer. Tonight, a fundraising dance called Give 'em Hell, Get Well Elle will help her family defray medical costs. When Elle defeats this horrible disease, any extra money will be donated to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital. In the interest of full disclosure, Elle's mom is a dear childhood friend of The Maven.

Where: Champions Sports Bar, 15 Thornton St., Biddeford.

Shop ME: The Serendipity Shop, a thrift/resale boutique to benefit the Bar Harbor Food Pantry, opens today (Saturday) in Hulls Cove.
When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays; 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
Where: Crooked Road at Dewey Street, Hulls Cove, Maine (on the way to Bar Harbor).
Web: Follow @SerendipityShop on Twitter.

Eat ME: Celebrate Giacomo's grand reopening with a cannoli. Or a vegetarian antipasto sandwich. Or a pound of proscuitto.
When: Whenever.
Where: 1 Central St., Bangor.
Web: Read Milva Smith's blog at http://www.italianuniverse.com/

Drink ME: We're celebrating this fine spring weekend with a pitcher of sangria from Rick Bayless' "Authentic Mexican." It makes the crap at every horrible Mexican chain taste like fruit cocktail floating in alcohol.
When: Whenever.
Where: Living room, deck, patio.
Web: N/A
Recipe:
2/3 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
   2/3 cup sugar
3 cups dry red wine (our preference is Notro, which we buy at Ampersand in Orono for $6.99 a bottle. Wine choice is crucial with sangria, and expensive doesn't necessarily equal good.)
   1 cup sparkling water
4 to 6 lime wheels for garnish
Mix together lime juice, sugar and 1/4 cup water, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Just before serving, pour wine into a pitcher; stir in sparkling water and lime syrup. Serve over ice in tall glasses, garnished with lime.

Bangor ME
As we mentioned earlier this week, Bangor is where it's at this weekend.
Where: Throughout the city.
When: All day Saturday.
Web: Read all about it here
