Of Snow And Silk

First off, if you're new to Maine Maven, welcome. Click here for a brief introduction and contact information. For the rest of you, we now return to your regularly scheduled Maven.

They say no two snowflakes are alike, but judging by how many of them we've seen this winter — OK, this week —we're not exactly sure if that's mathematically possible.

No matter. Because if you're looking for something truly one-of-a-kind, look no further than Michael Shyka Studio. Shyka is an Orrington native who trained with the masters and had a successful fashion biz in Miami before returning to his hometown. He creates bespoke wrap dresses, halter tops, scarves, evening gowns and skirts from silk that he paints by hand and the results are truly stunning, shockingly affordable (for custom, not for Marden's) and oh so flattering.

This ice-princess-worthy pattern — a new arrival — reminds us of the paper snowflakes we used to make in kindergarten, but his other designs have a decidedly tropical vibe. They're the perfect antidote to a too-long winter in Maine. And no two are alike. Of that, we're sure.

To view Michael Shyka's designs, visit Michael Shyka Studio at 40 Columbia St. in Bangor (open by chance and by appointment, but late mornings are usually a good bet) or see a selection of his work online at Posh Vintage.
