The Bourne Identity

Don't get us wrong — we love seaglass. The Maven spent her entire childhood walking the shores of Ferry Beach in Saco, stooped over, searching for glistening, gemlike bits of glass among the pebbles and wave-tossed shells.

But we are SO over seaglass jewelry. Well, most of it, anyway. With the exception of some of the more high-end stuff, it all looks pretty much the same.

When we discovered Obadiah Bourne Buell's jewelry at SevenArts Gallery in Ellsworth, we were completely surprised — and pleasantly so. Because this doesn't look like anything we've seen before.

In addition to making some of the most striking stone sculpture we've seen in Maine, Bourne Designs creates gorgeous — and unique — jewelry and housewares. Made of beach stones and glass forged together with epoxy, these bulletlike pendants are completely striking.

The pendants cost $35 on a leather cord or $45 on a sterling silver chain and are available at Etsy, SevenArts Gallery, online at Bourne Designs or by stopping into the Granite Garden Gallery and Bourne Designs Studio in Sullivan. Nestled among granite quarries Down East, the gallery is open by chance or appointment. Call 207.422.8926 for details.

In other, completely unrelated, news, Saturday's New York Times featured the University of Maine at Presque Isle's baseball team and the great distances the team needs to travel in order to play. It's a great read, and you can check it out here.

Finally, we said this yesterday and we'll say it again: If you have any suggestions for features or ways we can improve this site, please e-mail us at kristen@mainemaven.com. Ditto if you just want to say hi. You can follow us on Twitter — our username is MaineMaven. And pretty soon, we'll have a page on Facebook, too.
