Knit-Wit

Blame it on the weather. Or the fact that The Maven is in full-on hibernation mode. But all we want to do right now is knit. Fortunately, our yarn stash is so huge that leaving the house wasn't necessary this weekend. But that doesn't mean we don't love a good yarn shop. Here are a few of our local favorites, but please, tell us yours by posting a comment below.

Fiberphilia — Since we live in Orono, it's convenient to have a yarn shop right in town, but Fiberphilia would be a destination no matter where it was in Maine. We love this place. Owner Michele Goldman and her merry band of knitters are always great for help, conversation and encouragement, and the yarn selection is to die for.

String Theory Yarn — The setting alone — a beautifully restored farmhouse off the beaten path in Blue Hill — is worth the drive. But the yarn here, hand-dyed by owners Tanis Williams and Karen Grover — is incredible. It's so soft and knits up like a dream. Plus, the notions and accessories are equally beautiful.

Heavenly Socks Yarn — Walk down the stairs into this tiny yarn shop and find yourself surrounded by luxurious cashmeres, sassy handpaints and whimsical wools. Don't let the name fool you — it's not just socks. Knitters will find endless inspiration and great advice.
82 Main Street, Belfast, www.heavenlysocksyarns.com

Grace Robinson & Co. — This Freeport stalwart is like a high-end candy store for knitters, needlepointers and other needlecrafters. The friendly staff here is always willing to help with advice and inspiration, and the selection is one of — if not the — best in Maine.
208 U.S. Route 1, Freeport, www.yarnandneedlepoint.com

Shirley's — The first time we saw Shirley's, we almost didn't stop because it looks like a tourist trap souvenir shop. But we're glad we did. This place is PACKED with all sorts of luxurious yarn. We go there for Rowan, but usually leave with about five skeins of things we don't need.
677 U.S. Route 1, Hancock, no Web address.

Unique One in Camden is my go-to yarn shop and of course Hope Spinnery where the yarn is dyed and spun on site using local wool and wind power.

And can't forget Purl Diva in Brunswick - such a cute shop with a great selection of fiber.

Thanks for all the great recommendations!

Their on-line link appears to be broken, but Pine Tree Yarns on Main Street in Damariscotta is lovely.
