Maine To-Do List: 12.11.09

Baby, it's cold outside. You may be tempted to snuggle up by the fire (we certainly are), but there are certain things you need to do: buy a tree, turn the living room into Santa's Workshop and get your butt in gear, because Hanukkah starts tonight and you haven't bought your best friend any presents yet, let alone eight nights' worth. While you're at it, try to have a little fun this weekend. Below are a few festive ideas, including some shopping-related ones. And as Mom always said, be sure to wear a hat and mittens.

Eat ME
So what if you're the hostess with the leastest? Nobody needs to know if you serve up lobster pot pies from Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co. in Cundy's Harbor. They're amazing, and they can be at your house overnight, which means Saturday's dinner party won't be such a disaster after all.

Train ME
Imagine catching a train in Portland, but instead of heading to Boston, you're off to the North Pole. Intrigued? Board Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad's Polar Express — trips start the day after Thanksgiving and run through December 23. Holiday decorations light up the night alongside the tracks, and this year, the Children's Museum and Theater of Maine will give a theatrical reading of "Polar Express" and sing carols.
