To-Do List 9.17.09

The Maven has been laid up all week with some nasty illness, so our weekend plans might just include sleeping. If we were feeling a little more motivated (and could actually taste and smell food), here's what we'd do:

Eat ME
The Mount Desert Island Garlic Festival was started 12 years ago by Frank Pendola, who is a bit of a legend in these parts. He spends the entire weekend in the kitchen and won't leave unless there's a nuclear war, and even that's questionable. A few years back, he tilled up his entire yard and planted it with garlic and tomatoes. And his reservations-only restaurant, Nostrano, is like "Big Night" every night. The festival — a fundraiser for The Ark Animal Shelter — is a labor of love, or clove, as the case may be. Look online for the menu — mmmmmm.
When: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 19 (rain date Sept. 20)
Where: Smugglers Den Campground, Route 102, Southwest Harbor
Web: Nostrano

Drink ME
Right about now, we could really use a therapeutic blend from Homegrown Herb and Tea in Portland. There, proprietress Sarah Richards crafts custom teas while you watch and wait.
When: Now
Where: 195 Congress St., Portland
Web: Homegrown Herb and Tea

Cross The Border With ME
Embark on a real art adventure this weekend with the "Two Countries: One Bay Art Studio Tour," which spans from Calais to Lubec, Maine and St. Stephen to Campobello
Island, Canada; It's an amazing weekend trip and the artistry on both sides of the border is impressive. Bring your passport and download a tour map online before you leave.
When: Sept. 19-20
Where: New Brunswick and way Down East Maine
Web: www.twocountriesart.com.

Shop With ME
If you're headed to the western mountains or Quebec this weekend (and why wouldn't you be?), make a stop at Soll's Antiques in Canaan, which has the most amazing selection of stained glass we've seen in Maine. The place is loaded with architectural antiques, including period lighting, fixtures, sinks and what have you.
When: Call first — (207) 474-5396
Where: Route 2 in Canaan Village
Web: Soll's
