Slates, which recently rose like a phoenix from the ashes of a devastating fire, is back and better than ever. All of the good things — amazing food, great service, funky, art-filled decor — have continued. All of the problems — dark, tiny bathrooms, no real waiting area — have been solved. And we couldn't be happier, because we go there at least once a month to meet friends for the best meal ever invented: brunch.
On our last visit, we were torn between a mahi-mahi taco with creamy salsa verde; a croissant sandwich with rare roast beef and boursin; an omelet with local goat cheese, caramelized onions and mushrooms; and a smoked shrimp, caramelized onion and tomato Benedict. For old times' sake, I ordered my favorite: huevos rancheros. Jason, my husband, went for an omelet. So did our friend Erin. Her husband, Shawn, tried the shrimp Benedict, which was a plate full of creamy, smoky goodness.
One thing we all could agree on? Pomegranate mimosas. We raised our glasses in a toast — to good friends, good food and the triumphant return of a classic. To Slates, salut!
